Framing/Drywall Frequently Asked Questions
Framing FAQs
What are common house framing mistakes? Misaligned Framing: Sheathing panels require aligned, level framing for a smooth nailing surface. Any misalignment between adjacent trusses or rafters will cause the panel to bend, resulting in a wavy appearance.
How can I ensure my walls are straight? Use straight stock for walls (especially kitchens/baths) and properly align/brace walls during construction to avoid bowing.
What is a "jack stud" vs. a "king stud"? A king stud runs continuous from the floor to the top plate, while a jack stud (or trimmer) sits next to it to support the header over a window or door.
What is a "double top plate"? A standard practice where two layers of lumber are used for the top plate of a wall to provide extra strength and tie walls together
Drywall FAQs
What is the standard drywall thickness for ceilings and walls? For most residential interior walls, 1/2-inch is the go-to standard drywall thickness. This size hits the perfect sweet spot. It is strong enough to hold heavy picture frames and shelving, but lightweight enough to carry and install without too much physical strain.
How Do I Know If My Drywall Needs Repair? Sometimes the damage is obvious, like a hole from a moving accident. Other times, the signs are more subtle. Knowing what to look for can save you from bigger headaches and full drywall installation down the road.
How big a hole in drywall can I fix with spackle? Spackle is designed to fill small, nail-sized holes and isn’t strong enough to patch large areas. Dents or holes larger than 1” across or 1/2” deep should be repaired with a mesh patch and drywall compound.
Are there different types of drywall? Yes, there are multiple types of drywall that require different installation and repair techniques: - Standard or regular drywall is the most common, used for interior walls and ceilings. - Moisture-resistant drywall (AKA green board) has a mold and mildew resistant coating for high humidity areas like bathrooms, kitchens and basements. - Fire-resistant (AKA type X or C) drywall has non-combustible fibers that help it withstand fire longer than standard drywall. Building codes typically require its use in garages, stairwells and between living spaces and attached garages. - Soundproof (AKA acoustic) drywall is thicker and denser than standard drywall, with layers of gypsum and sound-dampening material to reduce noise transmission between rooms.
